Campus Dean Meet/Greet - Dr. David Pittman (20211014-00010)
As Senior Director for Student Engagement, Pittman provides strategic leadership and direction for a team of 12 full time staff members within the Center for Leadership Development, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and Student Involvement. His team's portfolio includes the advisement for all student organizations, Duke Student Government, the Graduate and Professional Student Council, DuArts, and the four Councils within Fraternity and Sorority Life. Additionally, Pittman provides oversight of the Arts Annex facilities. Pittman's 27-year career in higher education includes having worked in University Housing at the University of Tennessee, UNC-Chapel Hill, and the University of South Carolina, before serving as the Director of Student Activities at Florida State University. His passion for teaching and facilitation includes having taught a graduate higher education course, Diversity in Higher Education, at North Carolina State University and the First Year Experience course at University of South Carolina for 6 years. Most recently, Pittman collaborated with the School of Engineering, in designing the curriculum and instructing a pre-orientation program, and the first-year seminar, Thrive, for 50 first year students. Additionally, Pittman has devoted more than 20 years of service as a national facilitator for LeaderShape, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping transform the world by increasing the number of people who lead with integrity. David grew up in rural, Halifax, North Carolina. His early involvement in the community, both his 4-H club and performing in theater arts, influenced his decision to attend college. As a First-Generation college student, Pittman began his collegiate experience in a smaller environment at Barton College. After two years at Barton, he transferred to East Carolina University where he completed his undergraduate degree in social work and his master’s degree in counselor education. After completing 18 years’ experience in the workforce, Pittman returned to the classroom to complete his doctoral studies, while working full-time. David has returned to his roots of living in a small town, and now resides in Mebane, North Carolina. He enjoys the outdoors, including hiking and gardening, sporting events and concerts, theme parks, and traveling to warm and sunny tropical locations.
